History & Significance

Onam is Kerala's ancient harvest festival, celebrated to welcome the spirit of the legendary King Mahabali. According to Puranic tradition, Kerala witnessed its golden age under Mahabali's just and generous reign. To test his humility, Lord Vishnu appeared as the dwarf Brahmin Vamana and stepped over the three worlds. Impressed by the king's selflessness, Vamana granted him a boon to return from Patala (the underworld) to visit his beloved subjects once every year. This annual homecoming is celebrated as Onam.
