History & Significance

Ekadashi Vrat occurs on the 11th day of both the waxing (Shukla Paksha) and waning (Krishna Paksha) moon phases. According to the Padma Purana, a female deity (Ekadashi Devi) emerged from Lord Vishnu to destroy the demon Mura. Pleased, Lord Vishnu declared that anyone who fasts on this day would be freed from negative karma and gain direct entry to Vaikuntha (His spiritual abode). The fast is designed to refine our focus and detoxify the body by refraining from grains.

Frequently Asked Questions

All grains, including rice, wheat, barley, corn, and lentils/beans are strictly forbidden. Only fruits, milk, nuts, and tubers (like potatoes) are allowed.

According to scriptures, negative energies reside in grains on this day, and grain-free fasting aids physical detoxification and spiritual focus.
