Maha Shivratri, the 'Great Night of Shiva', is the solemn night when Lord Shiva performed the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and dissolution (Tandava). According to scriptures, it is also the night Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were married. Another Puranic legend states that during the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan), Shiva swallowed the deadly Halahala poison to save the universe, holding it in his throat which turned blue (Nilakantha). Chanting and keeping vigil on this night grants spiritual liberation.
